Pensamientos acerca de las Sagradisimas
15/02/2006
This is not my first venture into the world of blogging. I currently have another blog that I write in during football season. I am a Raider fan, and I usually have things to say about how the season is going (usually bad). This is the first time, however, that I am taking the time to write about the most beloved soccer team in all of Mexico.
Chivas Rayadas de Guadalajara is by far the most popular team in Mexico and quite possibly among the Chicano people of the United States. The history of the club goes all the way back to 1906, when a group of Europeans and Mexicans got together to create a team in Guadalajara. Two years later, in 1908, the Mexicans decided to separate themselves from the Euros, and thus the tradition of having only Mexican soccer players was born. Chivas is the only team in the Mexican Soccer League to field only Mexican-born players, and that is one of the biggest reasons why it has such a huge following.
Chivas has had popular players such as Jaime "Tubo" Gomez, Salvador Reyes (Last Chivas player to lead the league in scoring),"Snoopy" Perez, Eduardo de la Torre, Jose Manuel De la Torre, Javier Aguirre, Ramon Ramirez, Alberto Coyote, Javier "Zuly" Ledesma, Benjamin Galindo, Ramon Morales, and Oswaldo Sanchez. Currently, Chivas is the lifeline of the Mexican National team, as it provides anywhere from 5-9 players for international competition.
Other than playing in the domestic league and providing the National team with the majority of its players, Chivas currently compete in the international Copa Libertadores de America tournament. Last season, Chivas reached the Semi-final round but saw its magical run truncated by the Confederations Cup and the National Team's dependance on Chivas for players. Without 5 of its starters, Chivas were faced to take on an inferior Paranaense club and lost the first leg 3-0. In the second leg, with all of its players on the pitch, Chivas tied 2-2, but the series was lost on the first leg. This season, more of the same can be expected. Chivas will make a great run into the elimination round, but come April 1, all of the players going to compete in the World Cup will be taken into concentration with the National team. Chivas will be left to face the Round of 16, and the Quarterfinals without its biggest stars. Should Chivas go through to the Semifinals, they would be played after the World Cup, sometime in August. Chivas would be at full strength, and watch out.
In this, the club's 100th anniversary, it would be a fitting way to celebrate. First, the team wins the Libertadores tournament, then closes out the year with a Domestic league championship, it's 11th in the illustrious history of the club.
